Lunch with the Docs: Treating Complex Diagnostics in High Functioning Populations; A Psychological and Medical Perspective

The purpose of this presentation is to highlight some of the common clinical challenges that clinicians confront in treating co-occurring disorders and trauma within impaired healthcare professionals and executives in particular. 

Presentation #1: 

Utilization of Framework of Evaluation to Diagnose and Treat High Profile Clients

Rojas-PhotoSpeaker: Julio Rojas, PhD

Dr. Rojas will present a conceptual framework that he utilizes in his own outpatient-based practice to evaluate, diagnose and treat impaired health care providers and executives.  He will highlight some of the challenges of diagnosing and treating these co-occurring, complex and chronic conditions.  Lastly, he will underscore the importance of educating patients and equipping them for practicing integrated co-occurring recovery.

Dr. Julio Rojas joined the faculty in the College of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, in July, 2005. He is an Assistant Professor and the Director of the ExecuCare, an outpatient program designed to evaluate and treat impaired healthcare professionals and executives. His research focuses on treatment and training issues related to addictive disorders, psychiatric comorbidity and trauma. He was previously a staff psychologist with the Oklahoma Department of Corrections. Dr. Rojas earned his doctoral degree at the University of Georgia and completed his internship training at Malcolm Randall VA Medical Center in Gainesville, FL.  He completed his postdoctoral training in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in Chemical Dependency at the OUHSC. He is currently President-Elect of the Oklahoma Psychological Association and the Chair of the Colleague Assistance Program. He celebrated his 20th year in the addictions field in September 2012.

Learning Objectives:

1.  List three components of a Venn diagram framework for understanding co-occurring and trauma treatment with healthcare professionals and executives.

2.  Describe three specific ways to use this framework clinically to engage their patients in the evaluation, treatment and aftercare phases of treatment.

Presentation #2: 

Leveraging Long-Term Recovery: What we’ve learned from Physician Health Programs

GregSkipperSpeaker: Greg Skipper, MD

Physician Health Programs have utilized a form of care for addiction that is unique and has been proven effective. Data will be presented about this type of care and how it can be used in general populations.

Dr. Skipper has worked in the arena of professional health, impairment and occupational and addiction medicine for over 30 years. He is a Fellow of the American Board of Addiction Medicine and he is a certified Medical Review Officer. He is currently the director of Professional Health Services at Promises Treatment Centers in Los Angeles. He previously served as Medical Director of the Alabama Physician Health Program (1999-2011) and was on the council that created and oversaw the Oregon Health Professionals Program (1989-1993). He was the primary innovator of ethylglucuronide, EtG, testing, a new alcohol marker to better document abstinence. He was also a principle investigator of The Blueprint Study a National Study of Physician Health Programs, sponsored by a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation grant. Dr. Skipper was formerly Medical Director of Springbrook Hazelden and he was a chief advisor to the designing of the professionals program at Betty Ford Center and Bradford Health Services.

Learning Objectives:

1.  Be able to explain the three components that make professional programs unique from other forms of treatment of addictions.

2.  List at least 2 new markers for alcohol monitoring and describe how they work.

Elements Behavioral Health maintains responsibility for this program and its content. This program, when attended in its entirety, is available for ( 2 ) continuing education credits.

Promises is an approved provider for continuing education by the following authorities:  Board of Behavioral Sciences Examiners (Provider #PCE 2724) for MFT’s & LCSW’s; California Board of Registered Nursing (Provider #CEP 14368) for Registered Nurses.  Full-time participants can be awarded up to ( 2 ) CE’s upon completion of required evaluations.  Participants shall be provided certificates documenting attendance in this program and should retain this document.  Participants should check with their respective State Boards to confirm acceptance of these credits.  Partial credit is not offered by any of the aforementioned credentialing providers.
